“Hey there, Ms. Tatiana! How are you?” asked my doctor as I passed by him in the hallway of his practice.

“Well, I’m here to see you,” I said and laughed. “That should tell you how I am.” He laughed back. His nurse smiled as she invited me to step onto the scale.

“It’s the holidays,” I said as I watched her move the scale up, up, up. LOL

I wasn’t really concerned about a few extra pounds, but rather what was underneath it. You see, the delicious Croatian Christmas homemade treats threw me off my usually well-balanced diet, and even more importantly, I haven’t really been exercising or walking (it’s cold!).

I’ve been writing a lot! I’ve also been coaching, attending Zoom classes, planning, journaling, reading… and ALL of it while sitting down. That’s a lot of sitting hours.

My body tried to give me gentle signals. But I didn’t listen to them because  I really wanted to ‘just finish that one project’ and ‘just answer just a few more emails.’ I also get into a ‘zone’ and can stay there for hours, oblivious to my alarms that signal I should stand up and move around a bit.

So I ended up with some lower back pain that I hadn’t experienced before. And when I don’t recognize a pain or sensation in my body, I go see a doc.

I can treat symptoms with home remedies, massages, and gentle stretches (and yes, going back to a healthy diet and exercise regime), but I first want to explore. I want to get to the root of the problem so I can eliminate or correct the underlying causes.

I do the same with emotional pain, mental challenges (like anxiety and stress), and spiritual struggles.

Why not treat (and deeply heal) all that prevents us from feeling good while living our lives? This can mean going deep into the root of the problem –  which can be scary, uncomfortable, and feel very vulnerable – but the wellbeing on the other side of pain is worth it.

So…What do you do when your body gives you signals (whether it’s your body saying it needs rest or more exercise and movement)? How tuned into your body are you?

(In my case, I overestimated what my body could do over the holidays because I compared myself with my younger self and how much I used to be able to do.)

What about your heart? What do you do when your heart says it needs more peace, or more passion? And what about your spirit (the you that is connected and whole, and that holds the wisdom we often seek elsewhere)?

Ask yourself: Am I allowing my heart, my spirit, and my body (not just my mind) to be my guides and keep me healthy?

I invite you to reflect on these questions.

This song is not related to today’s topic, I just like it 🙂 (However, this song is written with such incredible vulnerability of going straight to the root of the emotional pain.)
