Recently we were preparing for a live stream with a full band.

My house was full of audio and lighting equipment. The lovely armchairs in my piano room were replaced by camera stands.

A friend drove from West Virginia to help us run it, David purchased a special audio mixer for it, another friend lent us his professional high-end LED lights, Blais took care of Luna when we rehearsed and I learned how to be a ‘broadcast’ editor.

Musicians learned the charts for our songs, lugged their equipment, set it up, worked with us as we fine-tuned the sound, lights, and cameras… and then practiced for three hours.

We worked on ‘a million little details’ the day before…

Here is the best thing: when I push that “GO LIVE” button, none of this is seen.

At that point, all of us are in our ‘element,’ our flow, our happy place. We don’t think about all that’s behind us.

If you were to watch the performance, you might feel our joy and our passion and let it stir up yours.

You might notice how easy our fingers move across the keys and the strings. You might be impressed by a fast solo or the drummer’s rhythms. It might remind you of your own gifts that you put a lot of work into or ones you have been taking for granted.

You might feel inspired to keep developing your skills (whether that be cooking, providing care for someone, reading and sharing wisdom with others, or building fences and fixing electrical outlets).

If you were in a quiet place, you might immerse yourself in the music and feel the sound waves make their way into your heart, mind, and body. Some songs might make you feel energized. Others might put you at ease and even relax you or bring you much-needed comfort.

If you connected with us through technology and on that unexplainable metaphysical level, we’d experience something beautiful together. Songs would awaken memories and connect you with past events and loved ones. We’d both come away feeling uplifted and refreshed.

How wondrous, right?

And if you think about it, the life that we all create is like our music show…

So much goes into it. A lot of practice, a lot of figuring out, learning new skills, moving pieces away and around to make space for what we need, building a circle of people we can rely and lean on, constant growing, preparing, adapting to new ways.

For us this has meant finding new apps, learning new technology, creating opportunities to perform when the venues closed down. What has it been for you?

I invite you to reflect on your gifts and all that you have put into developing them.

  • How are you sharing them with others?
  • Is there anything that you might want to “tune-up”?
  • How do you connect with others?
  • Now that the world is slowly opening up (still praying for those countries that are experiencing a lot of deaths from Covid), how do you plan to deepen those connections and expand your circles?

I don’t usually share our ‘rehearsal’ tapes – behind the scenes are usually reserved for my Patrons – but here is one of the songs we did at the live!
