What are some patterns or habits in your life that you want to change?

Maybe you tried something before and it didn’t work. You find yourself back in that old loop of negative thoughts or you keep reaching for the chips, bonbons, or alcoholic drinks. Or maybe no matter how much you try, you seem to end up in the same argument with your spouse/partner/child.

All of these patterns and habits drag us into discomfort. Even though nothing is terribly ‘wrong’ with our lives, we can feel stuck, unhappy, unfulfilled, unhealthy, and discouraged.

We often resign ourselves to living in these loops/patterns/habits, without bothering to change them. We tell ourselves it’s just the way it is, it’s our lot, our cross, our valley of tears – and we are happy to make excuses instead of a commitment to making a change.

At the same time, we all have ideas of how we would like to see the world around us change – stop the war, lower gas prices, or whatever you are passionate about.

(What comes up for me when I think of this is: “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?”)

I invite you to pause and ask yourself:

How committed am I to working on my well-being?

How does the amount of energy and time I spend on self-care compare to what I put into other work I’m doing?

Am I happy with the balance?

Recently, in my physical therapy session, I worked on breaking the habit of using back muscles while bending forward and lifting things. I can’t begin to describe how much brain power it took for me to isolate the muscle group I was trying to use – how awkward and weird it felt. It was almost like I was using a different body, not my own, LOL.

This is exactly how it feels when we are replacing a habit or pattern that isn’t serving our emotional, mental, or spiritual health – awkward, weird, even terrifying. It can also be defeating, because the moment I don’t focus on the new group of muscles, my body slips back into its old way.

My therapist suggested I use breath to reset whenever I noticed the wrong muscles tensing up (or hurting).

I knew that… LOL.

Breath is a superpower! Like a magic wand that directs our awareness to where we want it to be – instead of letting our monkey brain and our muscle memory take us away from it.

Try it!

Whenever you notice a pattern, a habit that you know is not promoting your wellbeing, stop and take a breath. Reset. Bring into your awareness what you really want and need. And then take the next step.

Now here is the thing… you might try this and then tell me that it didn’t work.

I couldn’t retrain my muscles by myself. I needed the physical therapist.

You might need an accountability partner or a coach.

Or… a really awesome 8-week class and coaching program on well-being 🙂

I’d love to support you through learning some new patterns that will support your health and help you change the old habits that might be causing you pain and discomfort.

It will be a very small group, so I can give plenty of attention to every participant. It’s different from the one I taught last year – this includes coaching too!

Song

I’m so happy to be on the road and doing concerts. Living Room concerts are getting to be my favorite!!!

Maybe you want to have one for your friends? Here is a song, one I often love to do during living room concerts…
