I’m writing this post from the back seat of my friend’s car. We are driving from Zadar to Peljesac (the peninsula near Dubrovnik).

The road is winding. The mountains we pass by, the fields and rivers, the sun setting on the Adriatic sea, vineyards, stone buildings, the red tile roofs – are stunning, magnificent, and so familiar. Comforting, really.

My friend’s husband is driving, my mom is in the front seat, and the three of us (high school friends) are snuggled in the back. A heatwave is hitting the area and it’s warm, even with the AC. But we don’t mind.

We are laughing and talking. It feels as if time collapsed into one – the past colliding with the present. I am both 17 and 51. It’s just like the line from one of my favorite songs: “we’re older but not wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same.”

We talk openly. Just being is easy with them. There’s nothing to prove, no one else to be but yourself, at all stages and in every phase of our life’s journeys.

There is no judgment and no expectations. Not from them, not from myself.

THIS is vacation.

Rest.

A break from trying too hard. A break from keeping it all together. A time in which support, love, and comfort are real.

A break from trying too hard. A break from keeping it all together. A time in which support, love, and comfort are real.

We missed a ferry, and no one complained about having to drive around the peninsula, adding a lot more time to our trip. We are happy.

I finally get to be in the picture with my two friends – the kind of pictures I often see on their social media profiles: at casual coffee dates, weekend hikes, dinners, birthday celebrations.

This is the ordinary stuff that I missed so much (because we share so many memories from our youth, it’s different from my dear friends on the other side of the Ocean).

We talk about turning points and life changes, and silly things that only we can laugh about.

By the time we reach our destination, each of us is a bit richer, a bit changed, a bit better than we were when we left (and a bit wrinkled and stiff too!).

I hope you read this and smile, remembering times with your friends, planning a future adventure or a trip (may I suggest Croatia? :)) – of course, when it’s Covid-safe.

This was a very short trip and it was totally worth it. I’d do it even just for a few days.

Music

Do you ever notice how just the right song shows up on the radio, playlist, or your social media feed, at just the right time?

When we arrived in Peljesac, we first dropped our friend off at a beach bar where she was meeting someone. And the band was playing “Those Were the Days.” 🙂

Plus, I absolutely love it when Croatian audiences sing along. They are LOUD. LOL… And they don’t shy away from showing emotion.

Here is the version of this song without an audience…
