I\u2019m sure at some point in your life you have asked yourself the question:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhat is my purpose?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n (Another way people ask this question is “What is God\u2019s will for my life?”<\/span><\/p>\n What did it feel like when you found an answer or even a hint of it?<\/span><\/p>\n What did you do when you asked that question and the answer was silence?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This week, I explored the concept of purpose with peers in my coaching certification program, with my coaching clients, as well as on my own in contemplation and in everyday actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Each of us has a \u2018Purpose\u2019 in life (our inner purpose with a capital \u201cP\u201d), and an outer \u2018purpose\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n The inner Purpose for all of us is simply to be who we were created to be<\/strong>\u00a0– a soul, a child of God. It’s always the same. We can\u2019t do anything about it. It\u2019s already there and we can\u2019t lose it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The outer purpose involves using our unique gifts and talents to\u00a0serve<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0It can change throughout our lives and it\u2019s something to be discovered, clarified, and cultivated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For example, my purpose as an artist is to inspire others to see beauty and miracles in ordinary things, heal deeper, and love more. Maybe it wouldn\u2019t be a moving song or a painting, but it might be an exchange with a client or a co-worker when they needed someone to talk to.<\/span><\/p>\n So, what is your purpose statement?<\/strong>\u00a0(For your life, career, parenthood, or any area of life.)<\/span><\/p>\n I had an interaction earlier this week that had me pondering about purpose too…\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n An arborist came to\u00a0inspect the trees that needed to be trimmed.\u00a0I stood in front of my house with him and he listened to me with interest as I told him about the holly tree that knocks on my bedroom window on stormy nights, the silver maple that \u2018cries sap\u2019 on my car in the summer, and the pine tree that Matthew, the boys and I planted together when we moved in.<\/span><\/p>\n He looked at the trees with such gentleness and care that my stories felt more like introducing family members to a friend and less like a business transaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I asked him about his job and interest in trees.<\/span><\/p>\n His face lit up. He said he had always loved trees and working outside with nature.
