{"id":3987,"date":"2020-08-24T09:47:30","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T09:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wakinguprevolution.com\/?p=3987"},"modified":"2020-08-24T09:47:30","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T09:47:30","slug":"why-do-we-hide-our-brokenness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tatianacameron.com\/dev\/why-do-we-hide-our-brokenness\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do We Hide Our Brokenness?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.98&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;7px|0px|20px|0px|false|false&#8221;][et_pb_row custom_padding=&#8221;27px|0px|0|0px|false|false&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.98&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.13&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; link_option_url_new_window=&#8221;on&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently, in our\u00a0<i>(un)Broken<\/i>\u00a0book study, we talked about<\/span><\/div>\n<ul class=\"extended-list-wrapper\">\n<li class=\"extended-bullet indent-1\" data-extended-bullet=\"1\" data-indent=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>covering up\u00a0<\/b>the \u2018shabby parts\u2019 of our lives\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"extended-bullet indent-1\" data-extended-bullet=\"1\" data-indent=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>shame as one of the main reasons<\/b>\u00a0we hide our fears, brokenness, imperfections<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"extended-bullet indent-1\" data-extended-bullet=\"1\" data-indent=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>empathy as the antidote to shame\u00a0<\/b>and as a catalyst to more connection and healing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is the beginning of a chapter that we used for our discussion:\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>(Cheryl, who I refer to, was my therapist at the time.)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>\u201cI wore my white slacks, Steward Witzman platform heels, black tank top, tiny Gap sweater, and a black necklace. I had my hair pulled back in a bun. I felt great walking into the waiting room &#8211; somehow, every time I go to see Cheryl, I make a point of dressing up. <\/i><i>Perhaps I didn&#8217;t want to look shabby, since we are talking about the shabby parts of my life\u2026\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><i>&#8211;\u00a0<\/i><a class=\"QuillHelpers-link textEditor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wakingup-store.myshopify.com\/collections\/unbroken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-is-link=\"http:\/\/xx4m.trk.elasticemail.com\/tracking\/click?d=tF9tNBIbaUDk5-j_IFBpfU8sCEepNEdjbjxOUfpkccwsIJ8-GKRl05m-toRquwGyP2xz2ZQAAqd7-qt2DDo8-Gi_dvIreUmMtuRHvSnLosRVFPDxN6Qzlac2dGFCFFdoOd8tjiVV5LewtgFxA02IuyfpaB3LGZWvO-Mkx6TOuspU0\"><i>(un)Broken: Songs My Father Taught Me<\/i><\/a><i>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Page 28<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I shared this journal entry in\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"QuillHelpers-link textEditor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wakingup-store.myshopify.com\/collections\/unbroken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-is-link=\"http:\/\/xx4m.trk.elasticemail.com\/tracking\/click?d=tF9tNBIbaUDk5-j_IFBpfU8sCEepNEdjbjxOUfpkccwsIJ8-GKRl05m-toRquwGyP2xz2ZQAAqd7-qt2DDo8-OU4eYttBDUpzXaVY3y-AVIEnoLYRK_XiP3KHaoQPklctEu2JgUrcv_C79h6GgcrNuX1AN1Yr7BXtDawj7eabzoB0\">(un)Broken<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">to describe one of my attempts to cover up what I was so ashamed of.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #704d8f;\"><i>Our brokenness can look so unacceptable to us that\u00a0<br \/><\/i><i>we become afraid to show up as who we are.<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We try to hide behind a picture version of ourselves that we think people would love more, and we keep our \u2018bad and ugly\u2019 parts hidden. And although today the filters and touched-up photos posted on social media can be a great front, this is not a new thing.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Think of Jackie Kennedy, who was my grandmother\u2019s hero of the \u2018never let them see you sweat and cry\u2019 mentality&#8230;<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We are taught to keep up an unattainable competitive expectation that we and the world around us put on us, but we can\u2019t uphold it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>We listen to the voice of shame that tells us we aren\u2019t good enough, not smart enough, not young enough, not old enough, that we aren\u2019t qualified or educated enough, and<\/b><i><b>\u00a0we begin to believe it.\u00a0<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We become full of shame.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Shame is difficult to break out of because it becomes a part of our identity.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. Bren\u00e9\u00a0Brown, who is a professor, author and researcher of vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy, explains how shame is different from guilt:<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>\u201cShame is a focus on self, guilt is a focus on behavior. Shame is \u201cI am bad.\u201d Guilt is \u201cI did something bad.\u201d Guilt: I\u2019m sorry. I made a mistake. Shame: I\u2019m sorry. I am a mistake.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><i><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; From her TED talk<\/span>\u00a0<\/i><a class=\"QuillHelpers-link textEditor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=psN1DORYYV0&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-is-link=\"http:\/\/xx4m.trk.elasticemail.com\/tracking\/click?d=tF9tNBIbaUDk5-j_IFBpfU8sCEepNEdjbjxOUfpkccyJTV3IPqHOe5g2TaF3wUF4jpkX67uopRw5yi36uKwxTO_gHng2NRP0sc7ONPXm0s-etCnoA492KFO9ngnipg1UcVELOKeIb76oCCFh-4TLthK4H1vPC7s11qjUHmjANgRp0\"><i>\u201cListening to Shame\u201d<\/i><\/a><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>(I highly recommend watching her talks and reading her books.)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the time when the story of<\/span>\u00a0<a class=\"QuillHelpers-link textEditor-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wakingup-store.myshopify.com\/collections\/unbroken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-is-link=\"http:\/\/xx4m.trk.elasticemail.com\/tracking\/click?d=tF9tNBIbaUDk5-j_IFBpfU8sCEepNEdjbjxOUfpkccwsIJ8-GKRl05m-toRquwGyP2xz2ZQAAqd7-qt2DDo8-AZ4A9S61xh7zFJ9p9AZRyyM4VaqfnGXLhyBMpsqHsV2yFQDdlIK85DF1BAIFdtAIvKCiIA3C0Q1jxmdJI1IMXdK0\">(un)Broken<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">took place, I was struggling with depression, anxieties, panic attacks, a failing marriage, unprocessed grief and trauma from the past.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I was afraid to even express thoughts and opinions that were different from those around me, and to sing songs that I thought my audience wouldn\u2019t approve of.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I was afraid that I&#8217;d be pushed deeper into shame, fear and loneliness by the\u00a0judgement and rejection from those who would think less of me if I let them see these parts of me.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>But shame\u00a0<\/b><i><b>feeds\u00a0<\/b><\/i><b>on secrecy, silence and judgement.\u00a0<\/b>And, according to Dr. Bren\u00e9\u00a0Brown, it correlates with depression, addiction, aggression, violence, suicide and bullying.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The music helped me\u00a0break some of my silence and secrecy and fear &#8211; because music has the power to disarm us and helps us to be more vulnerable.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We can\u2019t be vulnerable without courage. And courage and vulnerability bring us the empathy that is the only thing able to disarm and dismantle shame. (<i>Bren<\/i>\u00e9<i>\u00a0Brown describes this in her TED talk.<\/i>)\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>It took me years of work to get to the point where I could release this story<\/b>\u00a0(with courage and vulnerability), and offer it as an opportunity for others to reflect and explore how shame, vulnerability, courage and empathy affects our lives, our relationships and how we show up in the world.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I couldn\u2019t have done it without the help of several therapists, coaches and my emphatic friends who supported me through it.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #704d8f;\"><i>So&#8230; What is your story about the &#8220;shabby parts&#8221; of your life?<\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I invite you to reflect on it and journal about it. Or share it with someone you trust; someone who will understand with empathy.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bren\u00e9\u00a0Brown explains that\u00a0<b>when we move from shame to courage and vulnerability, we begin to feel more empathy and compassion toward ourselves and others<\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And more of those &#8211; and less of judgement and yelling &#8211; can bring healing from shame and create more connection between people.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Could it get us out of the mess we are in at the moment?
